Nobel Prize – Swedish Pride
Developed for Black Hearts Ball 2015. Exhibited at The Swedish Institute of Minnesota
Most famously the inventor of dynamite and armaments manufacturer, Alfred Nobel was known as “The Merchant of Death”. In reality a pacifist, he desired to improve his legacy. Through his 1895 will, Nobel established a trust to award exceptional people working to improve man-kind. Although the King of Sweden initially protested, a person from any country in the world is eligible to receive the prize. The Nobel Prize has brought much prestige and great pride to the country of Sweden. Each laureate receives a gold medal, a diploma custom created for each individual recipient and a sum of money.
This capsule collection re-envisions traditional Swedish garb and modernizes historic Nordic craft techniques. Hand printed silk reminiscent of rosemaling, painted leather resembles the aproned skirt, embroidered yarn inspired by Swedish weaving. Additionally, gold elements and layered fabric details honor the physical prizes themselves.
